What we choose to believe regarding Sappho's sexuality is largely a matter of individual faith & conviction rather than something we can ever hope to prove conclusively either way. She lived 2500 years ago for pity's sake! And therein lies the rub. We know that Sappho became notorious in her own life time for her amorous love of other women & that is a reputation that has survived through centuries of upheaval, loss, destruction, myth-making & the deliberate spreading of misinformation. So it is only right that in honour of this extraordinary women that we use the word lesbian to describe homosexual women, or at the very least a woman behaving in a homosexual manner. And that 'sapphic' should be used not only to describe all things pertaining to Sappho - but especially the amorous love of women for women. Musing over Kelly's dream - as one would - reminded me that when I was 16, I contacted a spirit during a seance who identified herself as Sappho. She sang me a song. This was the refrain: Never doubt that I do love you Never doubt that I do care But always come when I call And give to me your all My dear one Mmmm Maybe you had to be there. It would have been lovely if Kelly had been! |
